Does Off-Farm Labor Relax Farmers’ Credit Constraints? Evidence from Longitudinal Data for Vietnam We examine the relationship between participation in non-agricultural labor activities and farming production decisions, focusing on the use of inputs. In particular, we are interested in the hypothesis that income from non-agricultural labor relaxes credit constraints. Using longitudinal data for...

Credit Constraints, Quality, and Export Prices: Theory and Evidence from China

This paper examines (i) the relationship between the credit constraints faced by a firm and the unit value prices of its exports, as well as (ii) the relationship between the export prices of a firm and its productivity. The paper extends Melitz’s (2003) model of trade with heterogeneous firms by introducing endogenous quality, credit constraints and marketing costs. There are three key finding...

Migration, Liquidity Constraints, and Income Generation: Evidence from Randomized Credit Access in China

With full labor mobility, microcredit may finance production inputs that increase household labor demand and reduce migration. However, when migration is constrained by liquidity, access to credit may increase both migration and household business activity, yielding greater potential income gains. This study empirically examines the impacts of credit access on migration using data from a random...

I develop a model of job choice to test two mechanisms that might explain how...

Credit Constraints under Interaction of Supply Rationing and Demand Depression: Evidence from Rural Households in China

Under the interaction between imperfect formal credit system and rural households’ risk aversion behavior, rural households will be discouraged to depress their credit demand or replace it with informal credit, which we call demand-side credit constraints. It find that about 33.7...
